No fewer than thirteen passengers perish and 98 wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in public works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This pause was suggested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
