The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of planning a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.

This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or see it all from your phone there on your sofa? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's determination was the chance of Bolsonaro's "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the probes revealed a background of arranging to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The legal document emphasizes that the US embassy in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist US President Trump, prompting him to implement a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will experience a custody hearing on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that the former president be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he needed regular treatment for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which involved plans to assassinate his opponent and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, numerous his followers stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, Brasília.

The security forces took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by him whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
